evening call is an installation/composition responding to distorted conversations encountered whilst using skype with friends in located in london whilst on residency in france.
sounds generated from feedback and broken communication were set alongside a background of early evening birdsong which was present throughout each conversation.
the piece was created by plotting the rhythms and pitches of the feedback to the patterns of the birdsong.
noise and natural sound merge as technology impersonates nature, creating both rhythms and silences, which let the sound of the environment integrate with composed sounds.
the piece is discovered as an installation played through an old french telephone handset and was originally exhibited outdoors in the grounds of the residency. a second version of this work, using a british telecom handset has recently been exhibited at east pop west in london, exploring the communication between the two locations.
